Ready for the World – 2013

Aware. I was inspired by a challenge over at the Lettered Cottage to create a word that I want to define my entire year, and I couldn’t think of a more relevant one.

I want to be alert and aware of everything around me. Sometimes I feel so focused and honed in on reaching my goals, that all the peripheral noise kind of gets lost. There are advantages to that, but the most profound disadvantage I have found is that the peripheral noise is also my life and by choosing to consistently move forward with my brisk, precise and determined nature, I often miss out on the beauty and complexity of my environment.

I’d like to learn to stop and smell the flowers if you will. I guess I’ve always been afraid of this concept (to a certain extent), because I was concerned that if I slowed down at all – it would hamper my pace. Deter my final objectives from becoming reality.

As I get a bit older, and have a bit more life under my belt – I’ve come to realize that only through slowing down to appreciate that noise around me, that music around me, can I truly aspire to be the fulfilled and successful wife, sister, daughter, friend and human – that I want to be.

So here’s to an aware 2013. May we all find the courage to alter our ingrained habits enough to slow down and appreciate the bountiful blessings around us.

In closing, I’m going to post a picture of my little orange tabby – who helps me to stop and smell the flowers every day. Something about this little guy just helps me slow down a bit, and I sure am thankful for the little bugger 🙂

  1. “This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad”
I am so proud to see you finding your voice and witnessing so articulately to your fulfillment of that life. This is my daughter in whom I am well pleased!

  2. I love this — I too, often find myself too focused on one thing, while the rest of the world is happening around me. A good reminder to take a moment to stop and enjoy 🙂
