Can I Just Go Back to Cancun?

What can I say, the Polar Vortex kicked our tuckus this year and had us pawning for a trip down to the balmy ocean breezes. About mid-October, ya know, when it was already SNOWING up here in Michigan I just looked at Jay and told him if we didn’t plan a trip some place tropical for winter that I might shrivel up and die.

So in the interest of our sanity, we decided to book a trip down to sunny Cancun. And this wasn’t your run of the mill trip, oh no, it was all-inclusive baabbbbyyyy. Also known as – WAY nicer than any other trip the hubster or I had ever taken in this life or the last. Pretty sure our jaws didn’t bounce off the floor for a day. πŸ™‚

Things like this room.

Every little thing was magic my friends. πŸ™‚ Now the thing is, the hubby and I have not really been on a legit vacation since we got married – 5 years ago. I mean we’ve traveled warm places, but it was always to visit family and always with family. Which is great, don’t get me wrong, but it’s also nice to take a vacay with just my main squeeze every once and a blue moon, too. Especially when your view looks like this.

Cancun Mexico Resort

This vacation pretty much made up for our years of vacation neglect, but it also was a reminder to us that taking some time off for just us is such an amazing reboot to the system. Especially when that vacation is taken in the armpit of winter time, am I right?

I was kinda surprised when I got back to see that there were a lot of questions from all y’all on the resort, the location, etc. so I thought I’d spill the beans on the details for our vacation and what we liked, and didn’t like about it.

First, the resort was in Mexico. When we told people we were headed down there we did have a few people comment on the safety, etc. We chose to stay at the resort the entire time (vs. taking day trips) and we had absolutely positively no sense that we were anything but safe when we were there. We had a shuttle take us directly from the airport to the resort ($32 per person, round trip), and felt completely safe the entire time. Beyond that, everyone really went out of their way to be exceptionally friendly and accommodating.

We booked the vacation through Travelzoo, which is my absolute favorite way to get vacation leads. It sends you a top 20 list right to you email once a week (very dangerous) with vacations customized to your designated departure location. We found this website extremely helpful since we could just browse deals as they came through, and commit to one once we found a price point/time range that worked for us. The deal we found included round trip airfare from our location, which was really nice to have rolled into the price.

Now, another thing that made this vacation less stressful for us, was the fact that we had all the money set aside in a proverbial piggy bank ready to go, so we didn’t have to put anything on a credit card, or acquire debt to go. When we sold our car a few years back, we decided to officially allocate all the money that would have gone to our monthly payment and instead drop it into a vacation fund. Our car payment was $250, so each month we just have that money automatically deposited into our fund!

Vacation Savings Plan

Since I’m such a frugal little lady, this way of saving for vacations has been super helpful for us, since I feel like I’d hem and haw over it more if it was coming directly out of our emergency fund/general savings account.

So, y’all want a cost breakdown of how much this 4 night, 5 day trip to heaven set us back? With the promotion we found through Travelzoo, our total out of pocket cost was just over $800 per person. That cost included:

  • Round-trip Airfare from Detroit to Cancun
  • 4 nights at Villa Del Palmar resort in Cancun
  • All inclusive access to the resort (all meals, alcoholic drinks, beach rentals, room service, taxes and gratuities)
  • Gorgeous views of the ocean and the happiest husband there ever was πŸ™‚

Happy Husband

On top of it, there were wonderful surprises, like a complimentary room upgrade from a Garden View, to an Ocean View 1-bedroom suite with a full kitchen, dining room, living room and TWO full bathrooms!! Holy moley, I practically passed out in the lobby. Β Or maybe I was just taking in the view OF the lobby, which looked like this. πŸ˜‰

Villa Del Palmar

I’d say it was TOTALLY worth it! Definitely a splurge for two tight wads like us, but we are definitely planning on doing this again as soon as possible. I really can’t even describe how relaxing the entire experience was. To put it this way, our most stressful decision each evening was trying to decide which of the (4) full service restaurants to eat at each night. #HardLife

The ONLY thing we didn’t like about the resort, was some of the bratty American’s we came across! As my sweet husband said, if you can’t relax here, you can’t relax anywhere πŸ™‚

If you’d like more information on the resort we stayed at, you can visit their website, and here is the link for the Travelzoo Top 20.
