Banana Phone

Ring Ring Ring Ring Ring Ring, Banana Phone. He he. Now you got that song stuck in your head.

This post has actually nothing to do with banana phones (is there such a thing), but with a much more conventional sort of banana item, banana bread. Yes, a tried and true classic. Yes, you probably already have like 62 recipes for banana bread. But not this one, and this one is the BEST one. Notably, since chocolate chips are an addition, and who doesn’t like some extra chocolate?

As far as banana bread recipes go, this one follows many of the basic rules of thumb. The chocolate chips are the first exception, and the second is the addition of whole wheat. So it’s really health food, with chocolate in it. Winning! We add just a smidge of “normal” flour as well, but more on that later.

For everyone that is totally ready to back this loaf o’ bread after seeing that scrup dittly umptious picture above, here is the play by play. You’ll need:

  • ½ cup (1 stick or 4 ounces) unsalted butter
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups (~ 12 ounces) mashed ripe banana (2-3 medium to large bananas)
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 2/3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 cup white flour

First things first, beat together the butter, sugar, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and vanilla in a medium bowl until smooth. Then add your banana, sugar and eggs. Now comes my favorite part – the chocolate chips!

After that is all mixed together, add your final ingredient, the flour. Your recipe should be looking pretty much like this now. If it is green, or purple, you’ve done something wrong.

Now your pretty much ready to pop it in the oven. Oh, and by now, you shoulda’ pre-heating the oven to 350. I always forget to pre-heat it. So you should do that, so your bread turns out better than mine. Bake the bread for 50 minutes, and you’ll be ready to enjoy! Yum in your tum.
